Contraceptive pills are a simple, safe and convenient option.
However, some undesirable effects include bleeding between the periods, breast tenderness and nausea. Some serious but rare side effects which are more common in females above 35 years and having other medical problems include:

However, it is to be noted that these serious problems only arise in very few females who have other medical problems.
How It Works:
These are available for both males and females. The male condom is made up of latex. It is placed over penis and prevents the sperms (male fluid) from entering into the vagina. The female condom is made up of polyurethane and lines the vagina, thus preventing the sperms from entering the vagina.
Advantages include no need of technical procedure by doctor.
Disadvantages include breakage or tearing if incorrectly used.

What Does It Do?
Intrauterine device (IUD) is inserted into the uterus for long-term birth control (contraception). It prevents sperm (male fluid) from reaching the egg.
The device is inserted in your vagina in doctor’s clinic. During the procedure, you may experience dizziness, fainting, nausea and low blood pressure. Removal is also done in clinic.
The advantages of intrauterine device include no interruption with sexual intercourse, it can remain in place for 3 to 5 years and can be removed any time with no after effects.
However, few side effects include headache, breast tenderness, acne, mood changes etc.
A Contraceptive Implant:
It is a thin, flexible plastic implantation and measures about size of a cardboard matchstick. It is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It protects against pregnancy for up to three years.

Advantages of contraceptive implant include reversibility i.e. ability to become pregnant returns quickly when you stop using the implant,can be used while breastfeeding, can be used by women who cannot take contraceptive pills containing estrogen, continuous long-lasting birth control, no worries of taking regular pills or inserting anything in vagina before sexual intercourse.
The disadvantages are almost similar to those of intrauterine device. You can also have discoloration or scar formation on the skin present over the implant. Insertion of implant is done by a doctor.

This is a permanent birth control methods and includes surgery in which the tubes in the reproductive system are blocked.
This is the mode of birth control in case of unprotected sexual intercourse. This should not be used as a regular method of birth control. Emergency contraceptive pills are available and must be used for 5 days after unprotected sexual intercourse. If emergency oral contraceptives are unavailable, the regular pills can be used but they maybe less effective than the emergency pills.
