It is crucial to remain cautious of what foods to avoid in pregnancy. Though in normal days they might not have as extreme of an adverse effect but during pregnancy they can prove to be harmful. Following is a list of few foods to avoid during pregnancy.

Mercury Containing Fish

Mercury is a common element found in seas and oceans and some fish have a higher tendency to absorb it in their blood and muscles.

Fish like king mackerel sword fish and shark contain high levels of mercury. Mercury retards brain developments and growth in babies as it is a neurotoxin and also causes mercury poisoning. As an alternative to these fish, try salmon and catfish as these have comparatively lower levels of mercury. Consumption of 12 ounces a week is an adequate amount.

Undercooked Eggs

It is a well known fact that undercooked foods usually contain harmful bacteria. Such is the case with undercooked and raw eggs as they contain deadly bacteria known as salmonella. Salmonella is known to cause food poisoning and mind numbing pain in the abdomen followed by diarrhoea. All these symptoms can be extremely harmful for the baby. There are some of the foods to avoid during pregnancy like mayonnaise, mousse, tiramisu, hollandaise sauce, custards etc. The best way to avoid this is to buy pasteurized products.

Raw or Undercooked Meat

Eating meat that has still blood running in it is red or undercooked can be extremely dangerous. There are still toxins present in it including parasites. It takes a few weeks for the symptoms to finally arise but when they do they can cause food poisoning and extreme flu like symptoms that can lead to either miscarriages or still birth. Undercooked meat also contains salmonella that can cause diarrhoea, headaches and food poisoning. Try to cook your meat at home so you are completely sure that it is not undercooked.

Ready to eat meats or deli meats are also dangerous. Their protein portion loses all omega 3s and they have a high chance of being infected with toxins as well while being processed.

Unpasteurized milk

One of the foods to avoid during pregnancy is unpasteurized milk i.e. milk which has not been boiled to a certain temperature to kill bacteria.. When you drink it you are at a high risk of putting yourself in harm’s way with air borne diseases. It also contains bacteria that can give you gas, diarrhoea and digestive problems and stop absorption of food which is extremely harmful for the baby. To be on the safe side, boil milk at home by yourself so you are always satisfied with what you get.

Certain Fruits

To cut to the chase, the three fruits you should absolutely in every way stay away from are papaya, black grapes and pineapple.

Health and Mind Care

Pineapple induces softening of the cervix area causing early contraction or labour leading to premature birth of the child. Papaya is known to cause contractions so it can lead to a lot of complications and black grapes will increase the inner heat of your body which is dangerous for the developing baby.
